Doppiozero
The HummingbirdDoppiozero is an online cultural platform that enters the novel’s “The New Man” chapter not merely as a source of reading but as part of the chain through which ideas and names take shape. An essay encountered there informs the chapter’s conflict between truth and freedom; browsing the platform’s homepage leads to the name of a program associated with Miraijin.
Role in the Chapter
The chapter links the conflict between truth and freedom to Rocco Ronchi’s essay Metaphysics of Populism, published by Doppiozero on November 12, 2018. The narrator describes the essay as illuminating. Its appearance gives the chapter’s political and philosophical tension a specific point of departure: the issue is presented as something sharpened through reading, rather than as an abstract theme without an intellectual context.
The Origin of “Remember Your Future”
Doppiozero also supplies the setting for a small but consequential act of naming. While looking for Ronchi’s essay on the platform’s homepage, the narrator scrolls through its other offerings and encounters the title “Remember Your Future.” The title suggests the name for the program Miraijin collaborates with even before the narrator reads the essay bearing it. The narrator subsequently reads Mauro Zanchi’s essay, which describes a visit to the “Archives of the Future” section of the exhibition European Photography 2017 – Time Maps. Memory. Archives. Future, held at several venues in Reggio Emilia between May and July 2017 and curated by Diane Dufour, Elio Grazioli, and Walter Guadagnini. That reading, too, proves useful.
Significance
The two references show Doppiozero working in distinct but connected ways: Ronchi’s essay provides an intellectual stimulus for the truth-and-freedom conflict, while a title encountered during the search unexpectedly becomes a program name. The sequence—searching, browsing, noticing a phrase, then reading further—makes the platform part of the chapter’s account of how ideas and language travel from essays into the imagined future of Miraijin. The connection remains precise: the evidence identifies the essay, date, title, and naming process, without claiming that the platform itself created the program or its ideas.
